Bastyr Chapel is feast for ears, eyes
Area musicians regard the Bastyr University Chapel as wonderful place to perform, not only because the sound quality, but because the chapel itself is so lovely.
By Katherine Long
Seattle Times Eastside reporter
As Heather Blackburn drew the bow across the strings of her cello, the tender, passionate notes of a Brahms sonata filled the space of Bastyr University’s chapel, soaring five stories into the rectangular nave.
This chapel, formerly part of a Catholic seminary, was designed 50 years ago for the purpose of communion with God.
But somehow — perhaps by accident, perhaps by design — the chapel also captured that most elusive of qualities: near-perfect acoustics.

Kenmore named by Family Circle Magazine as one of the 10 best towns for families
KENMORE, WASHINGTON NAMED BY FAMILY CIRCLE AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST TOWNS:
Data Driven Survey Reveals the Best Communities across the Country
June 30, 2009, NEW YORK—Family Circle today announced the results of its exclusive survey to identify the best TOWNS AND CITIES across the country FOR FAMILIES. The communities featured in the magazine’s annual roundup of perfect places to call home combine affordable housing, good neighbors, green spaces and A+ public school systems. The results of the comprehensive survey appear in Family Circle’s August 2009 issue, on newsstands July 7th.
According to Family Circle’s survey, the 10 Best Towns are:
Ø Kenmore, Washington
Ø Rockwall, Texas
Ø Evans, Georgia
Ø Sherwood, Oregon
Ø Indian Trail, North Carolina
Ø Edina, Minnesota
Ø Noblesville, Indiana
Ø Perrysburg, Ohio
Ø Hendersonville, Tennessee
Ø Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
“The City of Kenmore is honored to be named as one of the top cities for families to live,” said Mayor David Baker. “I hear from many families that they choose to live here because of the natural setting, safe neighborhoods, and nationally recognized schools. Though Kenmore is in a metropolitan area, we are close to nature, with regional trails, state and local parks, and Lake Washington.”
According to the President and First Lady, the key to successful communities is the hard work and determination of the people who live there. Each of the towns honored is made up of forward thinking parents, teachers and students who are passionate about their hometown, dedicated to bettering their children’s futures and involved in advancing their local school systems as exemplified by the implementation of such programs as partnering with private medical groups to ensure treatment for students who don’t have health insurance and integrating dual language classes in grade school.
Survey Methodology
Family Circle partnered with Onboard Informatics, a New York City research firm that provides real estate, demographic and other data, to assemble an initial list of 1,700 cities and towns with populations between 15,000 and 150,000. From that, nearly 800 localities were selected with a high concentration of households with an average income of $75,000. We then assessed which places best met our family-friendly criteria—including affordable homes, quality schools, access to health care, green space, low crime rate and financial stability—and ranked them from top to bottom. Family Circle then selected the ten winners from among the highest-rated towns.
Greatschools.net, a nonprofit website with a mission to improve education by inspiring parents to get involved, provided Family Circle with the public school ratings used in the town rankings. The site profiles more than 90,000 public elementary, middle and high schools in 50 states.
