I would shop at anything that was better than safeway, QFC, Whole Foods, Central Market, Metropolitan Market, or Trader Joes. Which means everthing is better than safeway except Albertsons.

I occasionally shop at Trader Joes’s, really like it but it doesn’t do for everyday shopping. And I do like shopping at the QFCs in Canyon Park and Juanita, Tops in Woodinville, and Thriftway on Ballinger Way. I also like PCC which I seldom go to do to out of way locations. Safeway is for desperation shopping, last minute stuff. Kind of a sleezy store. I too would like a higher end grocery store here, especially a PCC which would tie in nicely with the new city hall Leed certified (green) building. Problem is that Kenmore’s population needs to almost quadruple, to about 100,000, before many of these boutique stores will consider signing on to the area. Just a fact of economics.

Seriously, Joan is spot on. Currently I go to Thriftway, down the far end of Ballinger, because the Safeway is unsatisfactory in so many ways and the Lake Forest Park Albertson’s is frankly kind of a pit. (The smell in the meats section, for example? Unpleasant and off-putting. And the produce is always poor.) I’d be very happy about a better grocery store coming to town.

I would absolutely LOVE a Trader Joe’s in Kenmore. I think the city (and surrounding cities) would definitely support a TJ.

I have mixed feelings about ANY new retail enterprise here in Kenmore. Certainly, a Trader Joe’s would appeal to the “hip/urbane” demographic. That’s fine, but do we really need yet another retailer in this town? Within 5 to 10 minutes from Kenmore there are a huge number of grocery stores to choose from. I’ve shopped in Trader Joe’s on numerous occasions and find them to be great if you like wine, chocolate, dried fruits and nuts and power bars. You can find all of these things in nearby, current retailers. As a “general grocery store” Trader Joe’s is mediocre.

I’ve said this a number of times on other blogs: Kenmore’s future depends on attracting and launching fundamental businesses such as small-carbon-footprint manufacturers, high-tech office space and the Lake Washington waterfront. There are far too many retail enterprises in this region. Do you seriously think Kenmore will compete with the Alderwood and Northgate retail cores?

If Kenmore aspires to be a 21st Century city, it needs to think more broadly and consider businesses that will offer good paying jobs, generate real revenue for the city and encourage people who actually live here in Kenmore to work here.

Trader Joe’s would nicley complement Safeway in Kenmore. However, I agree with James and would rather see more business offices in Kenmore.
